Football: Huron heads to Saline for rematch in playoff opener
The Huron football team lost on Friday but won the big one on Sunday – and with it comes another shot at the Saline Hornets.
The River Rats earned their third straight trip to the postseason with a 5-4 record and will play at Saline at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28. The Hornets finished 7-2 on the year.
The winner of Friday’s opening-round game will play the winner of Woodhaven (6-3) – Belleville (9-0). The Tigers are the No. 1 ranked team in the state and are the defending state champions. They defeated Huron 14-10 in a playoff opener last season before going all the way to Ford Field.
The River Rats won two of their final three games to get into the postseason. They lost 14-8 to Hold on Friday night. The Rams earned a playoff spot with a 6-3 record. Huron’s final two wins were 61-0 over Skyline and 50-7 over Lincoln.
Saline defeated Huron 35-24 way back in week two of the season. This will be the team’s fifth meeting in the last three seasons. The Hornets are 5-0 in that stretch but the games have been close.
The Hornets won their first six games of the season before losing back-to-back games to Bedford (7-0) and Dexter (21-14). They won their regular-season finale 49-21 over Lake Orion.
