Football: Huron falls to Bedford with Pioneer next

While Pioneer improved to 3-2 on the season with plans of marching all the way to the playoffs, the Huron football team is struggling with injuries and too many mistakes. The two shall meet on Friday at Huron in a game of teams trying to head in the right direction.

“We don’t like to make excuses but we have a lot of guys banged up and we are trying to get healthy,” said Huron Coach Antwain Mack. “Our offensive line is hurting. We hope to get a couple guys back for the Pioneer game.”

The Pioneers won their second straight on Friday, knocking off rival Skyline as the Eagles fall to 0-4 on the season.

The River Rats dropped to1-3 on the year and have lost three straight after winning their season opener 63-14 over Ecorse.

Huron fell to Bedford 42-7 on Friday night. The Kicking Mules are one of the better teams in the SEC White and improved to 4-1 on the season.

“They are a good football team,” Mack said. “They are good at what they do.”

The River Rats were still in the game at halftime, trailing 28-7. But mistakes and lack of depth continue to be challenges for Mack and his coaching staff.

“We are trying to get rid of the bad habits,” Mack said. “We need to make less mistakes. If we cut down on the mistakes we are in every game. We can play with anyone if we just reduce the mistakes.”

While the scores have been lopsided, the River Rats have been in many games. Even in their 52-8 loss to Saline two weeks ago, Huron showed signs of being competitive. The River Rats had the lead after the first quarter before the Hornets started buzzing in the second quarter.   

“We have to stay in the games mentally,” Mack said. “And we have to keep fighting.”

There should be plenty of fight in the River Rats with the Pioneers coming to Huron on Friday night.

“We need a good week of practice,” Mack said. “Pioneer is a good team but we can play with anyone if we cut down the mistakes.”
