Field Hockey: Pioneer scores 3-0 win over host Huron (See WLAA photo gallery)
Pioneer’s 3-0 win over host Huron on Monday night sure looked good on the scoreboard but it wasn’t the Pioneers best game of the year. Pioneer was solid, especially in the second half, but they can play better and more than likely will when the playoffs begin later this month.
Still, a win against a city rival is always a good thing – especially when that city rival is a two-time defending state champion.
“Huron is a really good team and they have a great coaching staff so we are always happy to leave here with a win,” said Pioneer Coach Jane Nixon.
Still, there is always room for improvement.
“It’s a Monday night game and we were coming off a real big week last week so we were focused on the basics and keeping it simple and bringing some energy,” said Pioneer Coach Jane Nixon. “It took us a while to get there tonight but we started to do all that later in the second half.”

The first half was fairly even with Pioneer getting a few more chances. They finally took advantage of some great pressure when senior Helen Brush scored with 4:10 left in the first half. After a big rush to the Huron goal, Brush fired a shot that ended up in the Huron goal.
The River Rats were still very much in the game late into the second half and had a few chances to net the equalizer. The Pioneers made it 2-0 with 8:34 left in the game on a goal by senior Serena Brimacombe.
The visitors put the game out of reach less than 2 minutes later when sophomore Zoe Bormet’s shot was tipped and went into the upper corner of the net at 7:18.

The Pioneers host Skyline at 6 p.m. on Thursday in another rivalry match.
The River Rats head to Chelsea for a 7 p.m. game on Thursday with the Bulldogs.
