District Soccer: Skyline defeats Saline on penalty kicks – See WLAA photogallery
Historically speaking, it was only fitting that this game would go into overtime and on to penalty kicks.
Skyline and Saline have a long and distinguished history on the pitch. Both the boys and girls are often among the best teams in the SEC, if not the state and one-goal, hard-fought games are not only common place but even expected.
And this brings us to Tuesday – and Dexter.
Following a three-day holiday weekend, Skyline and Saline met in a District semifinal game at Dexter. It was hot –very hot. And these two teams are used to playing on turf but even the natural grass on Dexter’s awesome pitch couldn’t slow down the Eagles or the Hornets.
And almost according to script, regulation ended in a scoreless tie. Neither team could score in overtime so it was up to penalty kicks to decide the winner. The Eagles converted four to the Hornets’ three to score a 1-0 win and advance to Saturday’s District final at Dexter against crosstown rival Huron. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m.
Skyline’s Casey Vigo, Brianna Ferguson, Sophia Morgan, and Fran Telemaco all converted their kicks for the Eagles. Skyline’s last kicker, Lia Tomilo, did not have to go after Saline missed for the second time.
Skyline goalie Sofia Nehro recorded the shutout for the Eagles.
Huron defeated Dexter 5-2 in the earlier semifinal game.
The River Rats and Eagles split during the regular season.
The winner will advance to the Dearborn Regional.
