Cross Country: Skyline races off to strong start in opening dual-meets
The Skyline boys and girls cross country teams got 2020 off to a running start with a few early races at the end of August. The Eagles went 3-1 against Allen Park and Hartland as they now prepare for dual-meets with Adrian on Saturday, Sept. 12 and against Saline on Wednesday, Sept. 16.
The boys team scored a 19-42 victory over Allen Park as the Eagles took five of the top six spots at Hudson Mills. Senior Hobbs Kessler was first (16:20.49) for Skyline. After Allen Park took second, the Eagles took the next four spots with junior Sanjay Rao (17:51.24), freshman Luke Suliman (18:12.12), senior Ian Steele (18:23.48) and sophomore Nicolas Fry (18:45.25).
Sophomore Christopher Van Lent was eighth (18:52.62), senior Forest Hadley ninth (19:16.10), junior Alex Ball 10th (19:21.86), senior Alex lekel-Johnson 11th (19:36.58), senior Elias Brush 12th (19:42.68), sophomore Eric VonBargen 13th (20:06.40) and freshman Henry Shaieb 14th (20:08.65).
The boys lost 20-40 to a very strong Hartland team despite Kessler taking first overall with a time of 15:14.29. Suliman was seventh (17:56.24) and Fry was ninth (18:26.83) for the Eagles.
Skyline is scheduled to run against Adrian on Saturday, Sept. 12.
Girls
The Skyline girls’ team opened 2020 with a pair of wins.
The Eagles ran past Allen Park 21-40 at Hudson Mills. The Eagles took four of the top spots with senior Laura O’Brien second (20:47.9), sophomore Lydia Cocciolone third (21:29.60), senior Catrin Koselka fourth (21:51.20) and sophomore Natalie Kessler fifth (22:01.90).
The Eagles then took the next SEVEN spots with senior Sierra Lubetkin (22:09.60), junior Caitlyn Donnelly (22:57.60), freshman Audrey Wells (23:14.70), freshman Celia Begosso (23:24.0), freshman Madeleine Kauffman (24:08.7), sophomore Yoko Miller (24:18.10) and sophomore Elizabeth Beck (24.29.10).
Three days later, the Eagles ran past Hartland 20-37.
O’Brien took first in 20:46.49 with Koselka second (21:14.43) and Cocciolone third (21:21.86). Kessler was sixth (21:46.03) and Lubetkin eighth (22:05.84).
