Cross Country: Pioneer boys and girls teams off to a quick start
The Pioneer boys’ cross country team left the starting blocks on Thursday at the Milford Invitational at Kensington Metropark. Pioneer landed third out of 18 teams with 118 points. Detroit Catholic Central finished first with 84 points followed by Clarkston with 110. Troy (123) was fourth and Farmington fifth (143).
The juniors were the head of the class for Pioneer. Juniors Vincent Peterson Sand (10th, 17 minutes, 28.26 seconds), Aaron Sterken (15th, 17:40.76), Liam Bredeweg (26th, 18:13.43) and Eric Overdier (28th, 18:16.99) all landed in the top 30.
Senior Nathan Milliman was 39th (18:45.99), freshman Beckett Crooks was 43rd (18:51.05), senior Matt Dombrowski was 44th (18:52.01), freshman Thomas DeJesus was 49th (18:53.78), freshman Sebastian Bagley was 53rd (19:02.50), junior Gabe Sanborn was 57th (19:11.52), senior Mike Dombrowski was 73rd (19:20.90) and freshman Theo Sacks-Thomas was 95th (19:40.28).
The Pioneer girls’ team opened the season late last month at the Pete Moss Benzie Central Invitational and placed second out of 11 teams. The Pioneers crossed the finish line with 70 points, just three points behind Grand Rapids Christian. Northville ran third with 72 points.
The Pioneers had three runners finish in the top 10 led by junior Emily Cooper, who was second in 18 minutes, 20.7 seconds. Junior Natalie Mello was seventh (19:20.0) and junior Sylvia Sanok Dufallo was eighth (19:26.0). Junior Katie Hume was 23rd (20:35.8), senior Allison Nutt was 30th (21:07.3), sophomore Lucy Pike was 45th (21:47.7) and sophomore Clara Peikert was 51st (22:09.3).
