Cross Country: Huron breaks out of the blocks with wins over Lincoln
The Huron cross country teams opened the 2020 season with victories over SEC rival Lincoln last week.
The boys’ team dominated at the front, taking six of the top spots to score a 19-43 win over the Railsplitters. The River Rats were led by Michael Hill-Carruthers who took first place in a close sprint to the finish line. The Huron senior finished in 17:25.1, just beating out Lincoln’s Jordan Ratliff (17:25.8).
Huron took the next five spots with senior Donovan Smith (17:55.8), sophomore Adam Bigelow (17:59.5), senior Peter Stenger (18:28.8), senior Roman Quesada (18:32.1) and senior Evan Ridenour (18:35.4). Senior Calvin Shaw was ninth (18:55.6) and freshman Lucas Weintrab was 10th (19:05.7).
Girls
The River Rats took the top three spots and ran off with a convincing 17-42 win over SEC foe Lincoln. Senior Sam Hastie took first (21:20.6) with freshman Emiko Sano second (21:43.3) and sophomore Rachel Overgaard third (22:40.6) to lead a gold-silver-bronze sweep.
Freshman Sonya Shelgikar was fifth (22:49.8), sophomore Mia Soloman was sixth (23:14.2) and freshman Sarah Conley took seventh (23:20.6).
The River Rats are scheduled to run against Dexter on Saturday, Sept. 12.
