Crew: Skyline hosts Head of the Gallup (WLAA photo gallery of Skyline, Pioneer)
It was a perfect day to be on land or water and those who enjoyed both on Saturday could be found along the banks of the Huron River.
The Skyline Crew program hosted the Head of the Gallup on Saturday in a “head race” – think time trial, with boats being released down the course in processional fashion.
The field included Skyline, Pioneer, Orchard Lake St Mary’s, Notre Dame Academy (Toledo), Traverse City Tritons and St Johns Jesuit (Toledo).
Teams rowed in Eights (8 rowers and a coxswain) and Fours (4 rowers and a coxswain) in timed, rolling start races. The race course was 2,400 meters, starting at the Huron Parkway Bridge in Gallup Park and ending just short of the Dixboro Dam at Old Dixboro Road.
Skyline boats did well amidst stiff competition earning multiple first, second and third place finishes. In general, fall training lays the groundwork and sets expectations for the competitive spring season.
“It was a great scrimmage and nice to see progress from the beginning of the season from all our crews,” said Skyline Coach Kit Bennett. “It was great to see strong local competition from around the state as well. I also was really proud of how the coaches ran the event, they did a fantastic job, it went very smoothly.”
The event also raised $1,000 for Ozone House!
Skyline had wins in the following events:
Womens Varsity Eight; Womens Varsity Four; Womens Junior Eight; Womens Novice Eight; Mens Novice Eight; Womens Third Varsity Four; Mens Junior Eight; Womens Novice Four; Womens Novice Four B; and Mens Novice Four.
