Crew: Skyline dominates Regionals, qualifies 4 boats to Nationals!

Due to the hard work of coaches and board members (including Head Coach, Kit Bennett) throughout the Midwest, regional championships were able to occur this year in an altered format, men’s crews raced on Saturday and women’s crews raced on Sunday.

The Skyline men put up an excellent performance on Saturday with all ten entries making finals (top 7 crews in region). The novice coxed quad won gold and the eight brought home bronze. The junior men earned silver in the eight and quad and bronze in the double. On Sunday the weather was atrocious so finals had to be canceled which meant the women’s junior quad and novice coxed quad did not have a chance to race (as these events were straight finals) especially unfortunate as both crews have worked hard and shown great promise. For the races that were able to run time trials in the morning the results were used to award points and medals, all eight Skyline women’s crews placed to progress to finals, earning silver in the junior double and Olivia Hansen earned silver in the varsity single as well.

As a team Skyline won both sculling points trophies for the men and the women and took 2nd overall out of all teams from the 8 states represented across sweep and sculling events. Only behind New Trier from Chicago, a school with 4500 students….

In an effort to reduce the number of athletes at SRAA National Championships this year only varsity events can qualify and compete hence gold winning varsity crews at Midwest’s progress to Nationals. Skyline’s qualifying boats are as follows: men’s varsity double: Armstrong Wang, and Andres Marquez-Collins; men’s varsity quad: Kian Bukowski, Ethan Gibb-Randall, Grayson Schultz, and Jaden Champion; women’s varsity double: Gretel Ham, and Emma Pettigrew; women’s varsity quad: Ellen Koselka, Meredith Gilbert, Audrey Corriere, and Rachel Howell.
