Community donations benefit hundreds of AAPS students, families in need

Thanks to community donations in the form of gift cards, winter clothing, presents, and cash, the AAPS District Wide Winter Giving program was able to provide for hundreds of AAPS students and their families this holiday season.
“It’s amazing to see what we can accomplish when we combine our efforts to support AAPS students,” said AAPS Strategic Partnership and Volunteer Coordinator Nancy Shore, who coordinated the effort through the AAPS Community Division. “From parents to volunteers to companies and organizations, we had all members of the AAPS community contribute to supporting our students.”
In her letter of thanks to the dozens of community supporters, Shore pointed out that because of them, AAPS was able to provide more than $11,000 in gift cards to 17 schools, including at least $500 for schools most in need; nearly $5,000 in winter clothing for AAPS students in need; and gifts for nearly 100 AAPS students experiencing homelessness.

Durham School Services staff led by General Manager Ed Gallagher and dispatcher DeShaun Thompkins loaded up three vehicles this week to deliver holiday gifts and winter clothing and other needed items to schools.
“I am beyond grateful for the collective efforts of everyone who had a hand in providing some extra care to our families during difficult times,” said Alicia Maylone, McKinney-Vento liaison, foster care liaison for AAPS. “From our Partnership coordinator, Nancy Shore, to our transportation team, and of course all of our amazing community donors, their support has brought many families some much-deserved joy, comfort, and happiness this year. It was tremendous to have our Durham elves helping connect these resources to families!”
