The Huron River Rats hosted Birmingham Brother Rice on Friday, Jan. 21, and while the visitors brought plenty of talent, Huron’s depth across the events and greater numbers won the day. Huron finished the meet with a 99-70 win over Brother Rice.

The Rats’ talent was evident in the opening relay, in which they took 1st (sophomore John Gao, senior Daniel Huang, and juniors Peter Fazekas and Alex Moskus) in 1:44.08 and 3rd (senior Bryce Yung, sophomore Kyle Smith, junior Joe O’Neal, and senior Ozan Uyulur) in 1:56.56. Senior/captain Drew Lindstrom finished the 200 Free on top in 1:48.34, with sophomore Franek Orlowski in 3rd (2:01.73), and junior Kenneth Jiang in 4th (2:03.17).  Captain/senior Jaden Martin finished in unscoring 5th (2:03.37), just a whisker behind Jiang. While Brother Rice’s Robbie Higgins took the 200 IM (2:06.12), Gao was just behind (2:07.52), and Huang (2:10.96) and sophomore Jeffery Wang (2:20.24) finished 3rd and 5th. In the 50 Free, Fazekas (23.11) eked out a win over Brother Rice’s James Rivard (23.13), with Moskus also close (23.24) for 3rd.  Brother Rice’s Higgins won the 100 Fly (56.05), closely followed by Huron’s Huang (57.59) in 2nd, and O’Neal (59.73) in 3rd. Rats Captain Lindstrom (49.12) was a close second behind Brother Rice’s Conner Kulka (48.94) in the 100 Free, with Orlowski (54.06) and Yung (56.53) taking 4th and 5th for the Rats, and in the 500 Free, Wang touched in 2nd (5:36.88), senior Matthew Dowling (5:44.86) in 3rd, and Captain Martin (5:55.29) in 4th.

In the speedy 200 Free Relay, the Rats (Yung, Moskus, Huang, and Lindstrom), finishing in 1:33.40, were edged out by Brother Rice (Kulka, Aidan Devine, Higgins, and Connor Pietsch) in 1:32.81, but Huron’s B (Jiang, Smith, Uyulur, and Martin) easily took 3rd (1:40.77).  In the backstroke, Huron finished 1st (Gao in 58.05), 2nd (O’Neal in 58.20,) and 4th, (sophomore Omar Abdulhak in 1:17.82, and 1st and 2nd in the 100 Breast, with Fazekas (1:01.43) swimming a D1 State time followed by Jiang (1:07.00).  Finally, Brother Rice’s 400 Free relay (Pietsch, Aidan Devine, Rivard, and Dominik Popp) finished 1st in 3:37.16, with Huron’s Lindstrom, Orlowski, Gao and O’Neal (3:39.68) in 2nd, and Martin, Wang, Dowling, and Fazekas (3:55.13) bringing home 3rd for Huron.
