Boys Basketball: Skyline knocks off Ludington in Motor City Roundball Classic
The Skyline boys’ basketball team defeated Ludington 58-42 last Wednesday in the Motor City Roundball Classic at Ferndale High School. It was Skyline’s final game of 2021 and sends the Eagles into the new year on a positive.
The Eagles had two players with double-doubles: Sam Koelling (14 points, 10 rebounds) and Will Gardner (10 points, 10 rebounds).
Skyline was led in scoring by Ben Stille with 16 points and 5 rebounds. Lucas Lynch had 5 points and 4 assists, James Harrison Jr. had 4 points and 3 assists, and Luke Williams had three points. Ish Abdul-Aziz, Kaleb Schlecht and Isaac Make each had two points.
Skyline will host Divine Child on Wednesday and will play at Saline on Tuesday, Jan. 11.
Ludington scored the first four points of the game before the Eagles took flight. Skyline locked in on their half-court defense and started attacking the basket against the Ludington’s half-court zone and some full-court pressing to take a 22-11 lead after the first quarter.
Skyline got scoring from six different players in the first quarter.
The second quarter found baskets hard to come by for both teams and Stille hit a three-point shot to end the first half to lift Skyline to a 32-19 lead at the break.
In the third quarter, Skyline had a very hard time making a basket in the opening 5 minutes of the quarter. The Skyline defense was able to hold the lead and then the offense regrouped and found attacking lanes against the Ludington full-court pressure and exploded to take a 46-26 lead at the end of three quarters.
Skyline was able to take care of the ball and work the clock down the stretch in the fourth quarter.
