Boys Basketball: Skyline dribbles past Monroe in SEC Red matchup
The Skyline boys’ basketball team built an early lead, built on that over the next two quarters and then coasted to the finish line with a 57-41 victory over visiting Monroe on Tuesday night.
Skyline started the game with a high level of defensive intensity and was able to convert early on offense in the half court and while pushing the ball in transition to build an 18-7 first quarter lead.
On the other end of the floor, Skyline pressured the ball and caused some turnovers and tough shots for Monroe.
Skyline was able to continue the strong half-court defensive effort against Monroe holding them to another seven points in the second quarter to take a 29-14 lead into halftime.
The Eagles continued to build on the lead in the third quarter. They had 19 points, scoring inside and outside to grow the lead to 48-27. Will Gardner had a great start to the third quarter with some strong scoring inside.
Skyline was able to maintain the lead in the fourth quarter and everyone was able to play in the final 3 minutes.
The overall defensive effort was led by Ish Abdubl-Aziz and James Harrison doing a great job on Monroe’s normal leading scorers.
The Eagles had a solid effort on both ends from the entire rotation: Sam Koelling had 14 points and 5 rebounds; Jayden Potts had 10 points and 6 rebounds; Harrison had 10 points; Ben Stille had 9 points and 9 rebounds; Gardner had 7 points and 5 rebounds; Abdul-Aziz had 4 points and 3 rebounds; and Lucas Lynch had 3 points and 3 rebounds.
