Boys Basketball: Pioneers hold off John Glenn in Washtenaw County Showcase

Pioneer overcame a rough third quarter to bounce Westland John Glenn 46-45 on Saturday at the Washtenaw County Showcase at Eastern Michigan University. It was the fourth of five games that day that included wins by Skyline and Dexter earlier in the tournament.

The Pioneers improved to 3-2 on the season.

Pioneer built a 12-9 first quarter lead and led 28-22 at halftime. But the offense went cold in the third quarter as the Pioneers managed just four points. The Rockets scored only eight but trimmed the deficit to 32-30 after three.

John Glenn outscored Pioneer 15-14 in the fourth quarter.

Tapio Heionen-Smith made all three field-goal attempts and finished with a team-high 10 points. He also had a team-high 11 rebounds.

Koebe Moore and Rasheed Sampson each had nine points and four rebounds for the winners. Mac VanRenterghem had eight points, three assists and two steals. Aidan Lee had four points and Conor Easthope had two points, four rebounds and four steals. Macail Fly had two points and two assists.

Pioneer plays at St. Mary’s Prep on Wednesday, Jan. 8 and plays host to Dexter on Friday, Jan. 10.
