Boys Basketball: Pioneer tops Old Redford to complete local sweep (WLAA photogallery)
After Huron and Skyline won its games in the Ann Arbor Classic on Saturday it was up to host Pioneer to finish off a sweep for the local teams. Old Redford wasn’t about to roll over and make it easy on the Pioneers.
The visitors battled all game but the Pioneers countered every time. Rasheed Sampson scored inside, Koebe Moore hit two free throws and then converted a layup to give Pioneer a 62-48 lead early in the fourth quarter and the hosts cruised from there for a 89-58 win in the final of three games of the annual AA Classic.
Moore led all scorers with 23 points, converting 13 of 16 free-throw attempts and 5 of 8 from the field. He also had eight rebounds, six assists and three steals.
Sampson had 17 points (7-13 shooting), seven rebounds and five blocks. Mac VanRenterghem and Aidan Lee each scored 15 and Macail Fly scored 10 for Pioneer.
The Pioneers came out strong in the first quarter. Conor Easthope (four points, five rebounds) scored inside to give the home team an early 5-2 lead. A triple from the top of the key from VanRenterghem pushed the lead to 14-8 with 3:10 left in the period. Pioneer led 21-12 after one.
A put-back by Easthope gave the Pioneers a 23-12 lead but Old Redford put on a run to cut the lead to 23-22 with 5 minutes left in the second quarter. The visitors took the lead at 25-24 on a banked in triple from the corner – yes, banked from the corner.
Lee scored inside to give the Pioneers a 26-25 lead and two free throws by Moore made it 28-25. But with 3:08 left in the quarter, Old Redford tied the game at 28-28.
Moore gave the Pioneers the lead again, this time at 31-28. A triple from the wing by VanRenterghem just before the end of the second quarter gave the hosts a 34-31 halftime lead.
Sampson and Lee converted layups to give Pioneer a 39-34 lead early in the third quarter. Moore scored inside to make it 43-34 with 5 minutes left in the third. Sampson scored inside on a nice jumper to push the lead to 51-43 with 1:45 left in the quarter.
Old Redford went on a run to cut the lead to 51-48 before Moore scored inside for the Pioneers to make it 53-48. A triple from the corner just before the buzzer by Fly gave the hosts a 56-48 lead after three quarters.
