Boys Basketball: Pioneer goes on the offensive in victory over Lincoln

The Pioneer boys’ basketball team turned up the offense Tuesday night in an impressive 63-50 victory over host Lincoln in an SEC contest. The Pioneers built an early lead and never looked back thanks to some strong shooting and by taking care of the basketball.

“It was probably our best offensive performance this season,” said Pioneer coach Rich Marion. “I felt we were pretty efficient and drove the ball in the paint. We spaced well, were patient and played connected.”

Pioneer had 12 assists to 6 turnovers which is pretty good for high school basketball. “The guys really bought in and worked hard over break so I’m happy they were rewarded,” Marion said.

Pioneer led 21-13 after the first quarter and took a commanding 38-24 lead into halftime. Lincoln outscored Pioneer 10-8 in the third quarter but Pioneer answered with a 17-16 fourth quarter to help seal the deal.

Pioneer had three players reach double figures in the win. Nate Freisthler was 5 of 12 from the floor and hit all eight free throws to finish with a game-high 18 points. He also had 10 rebounds and five assists. So, yeah, nice game.

Speaking of nice games, Tyler Mutinda made 8 of 11 field-goal attempts and finished with 17 points. He also had four rebounds.

Reed Yuhas finished with 12 points on 4 of 8 shooting. He also had four boards.

Miles Powell had six points and three steals and Carson Strauss had four points. Nelson Sompa had two points, five rebounds and four assists.

The Pioneers hit the road again on Friday for a game at Jackson and play at Ypsilanti on Saturday (5 p.m.).
