Boys Basketball: Huron knocks off University Prep in AA Classic (WLAA photogallery)
The Huron boys’ basketball team started its game on Saturday at noon and while it’s not exactly the time they are used to, it just might be the River Rats time in 2019-20. Despite still having a young roster, Huron is off to a perfect start with expectations that run all the way to the Breslin Center. And at this point and time there is no reason to doubt that this team can make a championship run.
Huron opened up a big early lead and coasted to an easy 73-35 win Saturday afternoon over University Prep Henry Ford in the first of three games at the annual Ann Arbor Classic at Pioneer High School.
Junior Julian Lewis led all scorers with 18 points. Senior Mike Robinson had 15 points, junior Devin Womack had 13 points and senior Mike Davis scored eight for Huron.
The River Rats came roaring out of the gate despite the early start, building a 7-0 lead on a triple by Robinson and four free throws from Lewis. Three-pointers from Lewis and Womack pushed Huron’s lead to 13-5 with 3:37 left in the first quarter.
A basket inside by Brandon Rawls gave the River Rats a 19-6 lead with 2:05 left. A nice drive to the basket by Womack made it 23-8. And to cap off a solid first quarter, Womack threw a perfect lobb pass to Robinson who slammed home two more points to send the River Rats to a 27-10 lead after one.
The River Rats slowed things down in the second quarter and University Prep tried to claw its way back into the game. They cut the lead to 36-19 with 3 minutes in the half. But a nice pass from Womack to Robinson gave Huron a 39-20 lead. Robinson scored again to push the lead to 20 points at 42-22 at halftime.
A dunk by Kingsley Perkins helped open up the second half. Lewis hit a triple to make it 49-24 and Womack’s three-pointer made it 52-26. Another nice pass from Womack to Lewis pushed Huron’s lead to 57-26.
Huron led 59-26 after three.
