Boys Basketball: Huron keeps on rolling with convincing win over Pioneer

The Pioneer boys’ basketball team had to get off to a good start if they were going to be in the game in the fourth quarter against the top-ranked team in the state. And despite coming into Huron riding a four-game winning streak, the Pioneers were going to have to play their best game of the season to knock off the River Rats.

They simply needed to be at a different level. But there may not be a team in the state at Huron’s level these days and they proved it with a dominating performance before a huge crowd and against a city rival.

Huron led 17-9 after the first quarter. OK, not the start they wanted but the visitors were still in the game. The River Rats outscored the Pioneers 14-8 in the second quarter to take a 31-17 lead. Coming back from a big deficit against this team on this night was not going to happen.

Huron pushed the lead to 50-33 after three and outscored Pioneer 24-20 in the fourth quarter to lock up a 74-53 win.

The River Rats had a 31-10 advantage on the boards and hit 31 of 54 shots. Pioneer shot 21 of 48 from the floor.

Macail Fly had another strong game for the Pioneers. He had 17 points on 6 of 11 shooting to lead the offense. Rasheed Sampson (5 of 8 shooting) and Mac VanRenterghem each scored 10 for the Pioneers. Koebe Moore had eight points and Conor Easthope had six points and five rebounds.
