Boys Basketball: Huron holds off Skyline to improve to 10-0

After a victory in a competitive contest on Monday night against Pioneer, the undefeated Huron River Rats headed back home to face the other crosstown rival, Skyline, on Tuesday night.

It was the same outcome for Huron in the same kind of competitive and hard-fought game. Everything you would expect in a city rivalry featuring two very good basketball teams.

The River Rats built an early lead and pushed the advantage into double figures in the third quarter. The Eagles weren’t going to let them off easy as they battled back to get the deficit into single digits in the fourth quarter.

But the River Rats made 8 of 14 free-throw attempts down the stretch and posted a 50-36 victory to improve to 10-0 on the season. Skyline falls to 4-2 in league play.

Skyline senior Jack Williams led the Eagles with 10 points, including two triples in the first quarter. Chris Cayton and Ashay Arora each scored five and Jayden Potts and Jermaine Davis each scored four for Skyline.

Devon Womack led Huron with 16 points. Trey Edmundson had 10 points, including three triples (he had four triples the previous night against Pioneer).  Julian Lewis scored nine and Kingsley Perkins had four for the River Rats.

Huron took a 14-8 first-quarter lead in what was mostly a half-court game with both teams trying to score on each other’s half-court defense. Williams made two triples for the Eagles and Edmundson knocked down two for the River Rats.

The second quarter was won by Skyline 5-4 as both teams struggled to score in the half court. The River Rats led 18-13 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Huron became more aggressive to the basket. The River Rats also found more rhythm and took good care of the ball against Skyline’s always difficult full-court pressure to take a 37-22 lead into the fourth quarter.

Huron hosts Monroe on Thursday. Skyline hosts Pioneer on Thursday.
