Boys Basketball: Eagles keep flying with 57-51 victory at Bedford
No letdown here. Following their emotional and satisfying win over top-ranked Huron on Friday night, the Skyline boys’ basketball team kept right on rolling with a hard-fought 57-51 SEC victory on Tuesday at Bedford – not an easy place to play.
“We were able to keep up enough defensive intensity to win on the road,” said Skyline Coach Mike Lovelace. “We were worked hard to press and trap in the first half and was able to cause some turnovers.”
The Eagles struggled on the offensive end but still managed to take a 14-9 lead after one quarter. Skyline created a little more separation in the second quarter to take a 26-20 halftime lead.
Skyline came out in the third quarter making some poor passes for turnovers and had a few bad shots and Bedford tied the game about 3 minutes into the third quarter.
After a Skyline timeout, the Eagles continued to use the press and rebound better and that led to much better passes and execution in transition. Skyline finished the third quarter on a very strong run to build a 44-35 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Bedford continued to make Skyline feel uneasy throughout the game, including the fourth quarter by making nine three-point shots and doing a good job handling the pressure. But the Eagles played good enough half-court defense down the stretch to keep the game out of reach and end with a victory.
Kabir Bergin was player of the game for Skyline making many big shots in the second half when Bedford was making a push. The senior finished with 19 points, including 10 in the second half.
Junior Chris Cayton had a solid game pushing the ball and working in transition with 11 points. Dinalli DeLoach played strong inside protecting the rim, grabbing rebounds and scoring eight points.
Jack Williams (seven points), Jermaine Davis (five points), Will Gardner (four points), James Harrision, Gabe Kellman and Ashay Arora all had major contributions on both ends of the court
Skyline goes to Saline on Friday for the final conference game of this season.
