Boys Basketball: Eagles keep flying, dunk Monroe 75-44 to improve to 7-1
The Skyline boys’ basketball team won 75-44 at Monroe on Friday to improve to 7-1 as the Eagles showed no letdown after their big city-rival win over Pioneer on Tuesday.
In the first quarter, Skyline used full-court pressure to try and set the tone. The Eagles forced some turnovers but also had some turnovers of their own and some missed opportunities so the first quarter came to a close with Skyline having a 14-11 lead.
Skyline started to execute a little better on offense and took advantage of some more defensive stops to build a 35-25 halftime lead. Skyline came out in the third quarter making a couple quick three-point shots and turned up the defensive full-court pressure while also really pushing the ball much quicker up the court. The Eagles put the game away with a 30-9 third-quarter run to push the lead to 65-34.
Skyline’s full-court defense got better as the game went on and the Trojans couldn’t keep up.
Offensively, Skyline had four players in double figures; Dinalli DeLoach (15), Jack Williams (13), Jermaine Davis (13) and Chris Cayton (12) and it was a solid team effort on the offensive end. Senior Kabir Bergin, who continues to lead this team with great overall stat lines, had 8 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Ashay Arora had a big three-point basket to start each half for six points. James Harrison played great defense and added six rebounds. Rob Knight had five rebounds and great hustle plays. Jarrett Sung and Trey Ellis each scored three points and Qasim Motan had two points for the Eagles.
