Baseball: Pioneers turn back late River Rats rally for 4-3 win

The Pioneer baseball team scored runs in four consecutive run and then had to hold on at the end in a 4-3 win over rival Huron on Wednesday. The River Rats scored two runs in the top of the seventh before the Pioneers finally put it in the books.

Both teams had five hits. The Pioneer had two errors while the River Rats were flawless in the field.

Sam Bassett Kennedy was solid on the mound for the Pioneers. He allowed just four hits and one earned run with two walks while striking out 10 Huron batters over six innings. Sean Knorr pitched the seventh inning and had two strikeouts to earn the save.

Huron’s Ozan Uyulur allowed two hits and four runs with seven walks in five innings. He had three strikeouts. Creed Villanueva pitched one inning and allowed three hits but no runs.

Matt Grier was 2-for-4 for the Pioneers. Donnie Thompson, Anthony Gibbons (one run) and AJ Lewis each had hits. Julius Kass had a walk and an RBI. Sean Knorr had three walks and a run scored.

Huron’s Ethan Moran was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Uyulur had a hit and two RBI. Ethan Smith (one run, one RBI) and Ben Locke (walk) also had hits for the River Rats.
