Baseball: Huron earns splits with Lincoln, Riverview to open the season
The Huron baseball team is playing some competitive ball early in the season. The River Rats have played in three one-run games out of four to start the 2021 season. They’ve come out on top in three of the four.
Huron opened the season on Friday with a double-header split against visiting Lincoln.
The River Rats won the opener 5-4 despite falling behind 3-0 in the first inning. Huron scored four in the fifth to tie the game at 4-4 and then scored the winner in the seventh on Ben Lauer’s walk-off single. Ozan Uyulur led Huron with three hits in three at bats. Lauer and Ethan Moran also had hits.
Huron didn’t commit a single error in the field. Lauer had seven chances in the field, the most on the team.
Lincoln scored four runs in the third inning and this time held on for a 4-1 win in the second game.
Ethan Smith and Noah Mahmoud had hits for the River Rats.
On Saturday, Huron split a double-header with Riverview in a non-league game.Huron won the opener 10-9 as they scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to rally for the win. The game was tied at 9-9 when Uyulur singled in the winning run.
The River Rats led 2-0 after one but fell behind 7-2 after five innings. Huron scored six in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh for the win. Brayden Yannone earned the win pitching in relief.
Uyulur was 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBI. Smith did his job from the leadoff spot – getting on base. He had two hits and three walks and scored three times in the win. Moran had four RBI on the day. Boehmer and Mahmoud each had a hit.
The Pirates earned the split with a 5-4 win in the second game after THEY scored two runs in the seventh to win it. The River Rats scored two in the third and two more in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead.
Uyulur continued his hot start to the season with two hits and three RBI. Mahmoud and Peter Overgaard also had two hits for the River Rats. Ben Lauer had a hit for Huron.
