Baseball: Gerdenich, Stamper help lead Skyline over Saline in Districts
Saline is hosting the baseball Districts this weekend – unfortunately, the Hornets won’t be around for some home cooking. The Skyline Eagles saw to that with an impressive 4-1 win over the talented Hornets in a District quarterfinal baseball game on Tuesday.
Despite coming in with an impressive 25-9 record, Saline managed just one run and three hits off Skyline starter Alex Gerdenich. Strong pitching can make a big difference in the postseason and the Eagles proved that all the way to the next round.
Gerdenich allowed just three hits and three walks over seven innings. He tossed 102 pitches and recorded seven strikeouts in the victory.
Skyline led 1-0 in the first and added runs in the third and the fifth for a 3-0 lead. After Saline scored in the sixth, Skyline answered with a run in the seventh.
Dayton Stamper has a monster day at the plate for the Eagles. He went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and a double. Gerdenich also contributed at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Owen Sluymers-Tuccinardi was 2-for-4 with a double and Jake Middleton had a walk, RBI and run scored.
The Eagles will face city rival Pioneer at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the first District semifinal game. The other side of the bracket features Huron against Ypsilanti starting at 12:30. The finals are at 3 p.m. on Saturday. All games are at Saline.
