B2B Trail Update: Chelsea-Stockbridge Connection B2B Groundbreaking

Chelsea – On Thursday, Aug. 8, the Huron Waterloo Pathways Initiative (HWPI) in partnership with the Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commision (WCPARC), held a ceremony to mark the start of construction of phase 2 of the Chelsea-Stockbridge connection of the Border-to-Border Trail (B2B).

This 2.1 mile segment picks up where the first phase ends and will pass along the edge of Green Lake, cross into the Pinckney Recreation Area, and re-emerge at North Territorial Road.

Two exciting elements have been added to this section of the trail. The first is a new B2B trailhead located at the intersection of North Territorial Road and M52, adjacent to the Lyndon Township hall. Parking, shelter, bathrooms and other amenities will be available.

The second feature is a tunnel crossing of M52 to replace a planned at-grade crossing. The tunnel will connect the Waterloo and Pinckney Recreation Areas and will serve as a major safety improvement for the trail.

Construction of the tunnel was made possible by more than 40 Chelsea area businesses and individuals who raised $1 million to include this element in the trail design. Enhancements to improve the trail user experience such as the tunnel are possible due to the generous private sector support from the community. Construction is expected to be completed and open to the public in 2020.

Progress on the B2B continues in other areas of the county with 3.2 miles of the B2B currently under construction.

A 1.2 mile segment from the Dexter-Huron Metropark to Zeeb Road, including the installation of two bridges over the Huron River, is underway. In addition, a 2.1 mile segment from Freer Road to Lima Center Road is nearly complete, with a trail opening ceremony scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 27 at 4 p.m.
