A 2017 study shows that nationwide, about 20 percent of students ages 12-18 experience bullying.
Every October, Slauson Middle School joins other schools across the district and country in observance of National Bullying Prevention Month.
Middle school can be a challenging period for students who are learning to adjust to the social pressures of navigating friendship dynamics, social media, and tween culture,” says Slauson Middle School Principal Lisa Anglin. “Emphasizing the responsibility we all share in challenging a bullying culture within the school setting is critical to maintaining a safe learning environment and developing responsible student citizens.
The goal this month is to encourage schools to work together to stop bullying and cyberbullying by increasing awareness of the prevalence and impact of bullying on all children of all ages.
Throughout the month, Slauson students spend their daily advisory periods learning about this important issue.
Activities have included:
- Wednesdays in October – Slauson staff are “Heroes in the Hallway”—an initiative to promote a positive, safe school climate
- Advisory classes’ anti-bullying door decorating contest
- The counseling department hosted the Washtenaw Children’s Organization’s presentation of anti-bullying & cyber safety topics supporting student awareness, making positive choices online, and staying safe as internet and social media users.
