AAPS: New Rec & Ed camp teaches practical skills in video production
Rec & Ed‘s new camp this summer is helping kids learn how to produce, direct, and make TV, all while developing teamwork skills.
Designed for students ages 11 to 15, the TV Lights, Camera & Action Video Camp is led by Community Television Network staff at its Ann Arbor facility and studio.
During these two one-week camps, students meet at CTN and learn from the pros how to write scripts, be on-air talent, run in-the-field video cameras, understand lighting techniques, and more. All participants’ final work will be on CTN Cable TV and YouTube.
Camp Director Jamie Chiu, who is CTN’s multi-media production instructor said she is teaching practical skills the students will surely be able to apply in the future while working as teams, sharing resources, and using conflict management in the creation of videos.
Students also write their own scripts, act in them, videotape them using CTN’s camcorders, and then edit their work using Final Cut Pro software.
Chiu said the students seem to like the editing process best of all.
“It’s something that they’ve been really enjoying, especially with the popularization of social media and a lot of that kind of stuff,” she said. “Video editing as a skill that definitely will be applicable in the future for them.”
