Soccer: Pioneer dominates in 3-1 win over Monroe (see WLAA photo gallery)

The Pioneer soccer team bounced back from a tough 3-2 loss to Skyline earlier in the week with a dominating 3-1 win over visiting Monroe on Thursday.

The Pioneers controlled the game, especially in the first half. Monroe took a 1-0 lead on its only shot on goal in the first half. But that seemed to only fire up the Pioneers, who not only picked up the intensity but scored three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 halftime lead.

Kevin Lawson scored on a scramble in front of the net to tie the game at 1-1.

Then, Pioneer scored a textbook goal. Edwin Gomez-Ruiz made a nice move down the left side and then delivered a perfect cross to Oliver Snelling. The senior one-timed the pass into the back of the net to push Pioneer in front 2-1 with 10:26 left in the first half.

Kelvin Jia made it 3-1 after his rocket shot from about 20 yards out hit the back of the net to deliver the knockout with a few minutes left in the first half.

“We got a lot of guys minutes which is always nice,” said Pioneer Coach Jon Sundermann. “I thought we controlled the game but need to do a better job in the final third.”

Pioneer will host Skyline at 7 p.m. on Monday in a rematch of that SEC clash.
