Swimming: Huron clocks excellent performances against Pioneer

The Huron River Rats Swim/Dive team hosted Pioneer on Thursday for another eerily-quiet-in-the-stands but full-of-spirit-on-the-deck meet.  The Rats scored 63 points against 123 for the state-champion-hopeful Pioneers and can be very proud of their performance.

Senior/captain diver Annie Costello racked up 283.80 points to take the diving handily over Pioneer junior Alexandra Mercier (238.85). Senior Julie Park (218.55) dove  3rd for Huron and sophomore Hannah Margolis (195.50), 4th.   Junior Maggie Thomas took 6th in exhibition (170.35), and junior Sitara Baxendale (126.70) finished 8th.

In the swimming events, senior/captain Emily Tran had a banner evening, pocketing two D1 state cuts with a win in the 100 Fly (59.92) and a 2nd place in the 100 Back (1:00.34).  Senior/captain Annaliese Streeter also had a good night, finishing 2nd to Tran in the fly (1:00.51) and also in the 100 Breast (1:06.33), one second fromPioneer’s Lily Cramer (1:05.31). River Rat freshman Jasmine Xu was 2nd in the 500 (5:33.38), behind Pioneer’s Edwina Jalet (5:23.35), and 4th in the 200 (2:01.25), and junior Zannah Baker also took a 2nd place, in the 50 Free (25.20) just behind Pioneer’s Vivian Van Renterghem (25.03), and touched in 4th in the 100 Free (56.75).

Other point scorers for Huron included the speedy 200 Medley squad (Tran, Streeter, freshman Sawako Sakamoto, and Baker), ending up 3rd (1:52.52); junior Kathryn Hemmila, picking up 5th place points in the 200 Free (2:08.99); the Sakamoto sisters in the 200 IM, with Sawako, 3rd (2:23.11) and junior Ayaka with 5th place points (2:35.01); Sawako, also taking 4th in the 100 Back (1:04.63); junior Emma Kaipainen, 5th in the 50 Free (26.75) and 4th in the 100 Breast (1;11.81); senior Ella Szymansky, with 5th place points in the 100 Free (1:03.51); and senior Clara Bowman, 5th in the 100 Back (1:07.69).

Huron’s 4 X 100 Relay (Xu, Tran, Baker, Streeter), continuing to zone in on the D1 cut, finished 2nd (3:47.09) behind Pioneer’s super-fast juniors Van Renterghem, Amelia Weyhing, Lindsay Orringer-Hau, and Autumn Bullinger (3:39.89).

The Rats will face Skyline at Skyline next Thursday, Oct. 15th.
