Tennis: Huron defeats Pioneer, Skyline in SEC league meet (see WLAA Huron photo gallery)

The Huron tennis team had a big day on Wednesday in Saline at the SEC Red Division championships. The River Rats knocked off both city rivals, Pioneer and Skyline.

The River Rats won three of the four doubles events to land a tough 5-3 win over the Pioneers.

Huron’s No. 1 singles player Angie Zhou defeated Stanley Rhodes 6-2, 3-0 in a match that was called after three games in the second set. At two singles, Pioneer’s Isaac Herrenkohl defeated Andy Andea 7-5, 6-3. Pioneer’s Noah Vogel defeated Michael Shi at three singles 6-3, 7-6 (0). At four singles, Huron’s Nick Pauken defeated Corin Tang 6-4, 6-1.

At one doubles, the Huron team of Nick Grosh and TJ Bai defeated Sam Berkooz and Jack Aachibald 6-1, 6-0. At two doubles, Huron’s team of Vincent Tremonti and Aidan Storey defeated Evan Roopas and Aditya Abbaraju 6-4, 4-6, 11-9.

At three doubles, Huron’s duo of Rishab Jayaraman and Lee Finger-Myers won 6-3, 6-0 over Shankrith Chandru and Will Castanier. At four doubles, the Pioneer team of Joseph Alphonso and Alex Roopas defeated Agosto D’Andrea and Ahmed Hejazi won 6-4, 6-2.

After opening the SEC tournament with an 8-0 win over Saline, the River Rats netted a 7-1 win over Skyline.

Skyline’s lone victory came at one singles with Anthony Van Oyen defeating Zhou 1-6, 6-3, 1-0.

Huron won the rest of the singles: Andea defeated Arya Joshi 6-1, 6-0 at two singles; Shi won 6-0, 6-0 over Arjun Joshi at three singles; and Pauken won 6-2, 6-0 over Daniel Rogers at four singles.

At one doubles, Grosh and Bai defeated Nikhil Gunaratnam and Alex Verdiyan 6-7, 6-4, 1-0. At two doubles, Tremonti and Storey defeated Sam Begosso and Michael Zhou 6-2, 6-3.

At three doubles, Huron’s duo of Jayaraman and Finger-Myers won 6-1, 6-3 over Andrew Cooke and Ethan Sung. At four doubles, D’Andrea and Hejazi won 6-2, 6-1 over Aadith Kumar and Marco Gelio.

Also during the SEC tournament, Pioneer defeated Skyline 5-1 and swept Saline 8-0. Against the Eagles, the Pioneers won all the singles events. The only loss came at three doubles when Skyline’s team of Cooke and Sung won a close 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 match over Pioneer’s Chandru and Castanier.

The Eagles defeated Saline 6-2 in their other SEC match.
