Field Hockey: Pioneer tops Huron, draws even with Skyline in early matches

The Pioneer field hockey team was Division 1 state runner-ups a year ago, falling to Dexter in the State Finals. The Pioneers have long been among the top programs in the state and they opened the 2020 season with a couple city rivalry matchups to get things rolling.

The Pioneers opened the year with a 2-0 win over Huron, another elite program, on Monday. Pioneer led 1-0 after one period and 2-0 heading into the final period.

Mary Huffman and Natalie Millman scored for the Pioneers. Ella Roberts earned the win in goal, making three saves on the night.

Helen Schmitter played the whole game in goal for Huron and made six saves.

On Wednesday, Pioneer tied a very strong Skyline team 1-1. Zoe Bormet scored for the Pioneers. Roberts made six saves in goal for Pioneer.

On Wednesday, Huron knocked off Saline 2-1. Kate Hurley and Eva Erhardt scored for the River Rats. Schmitter made 12 saves in goal for Huron.

Pioneer will see the two local teams again before the month is over. They host Huron on Wednesday and Skyline on Wednesday, Sept. 30. Skyline plays at Huron on Monday.
