Tennis: Greenhills serving up another strong lineup for 2020

The Greenhills tennis program is used to being first whether in dual-matches, regionals and even state finals and last year was no exception. The Gryphons went 14-0-1 last year and took 39 out of a possible 40 points at the state finals to cruise to another Division 3 state championship. They also were Catholic League champions.

Eric Gajar, now in his 26th year as coach, has five returning players who won individual flight championships last season. They have experience and plenty of talent in the singles lineup and at one doubles.

“We need to gain some match experience,” says Gajar. “Our two-four doubles have collectively played zero varsity matches prior to this season.”

The Gryphons have opened the season with seven wins in their first nine matches.

Top returning players include junior Mert Oral (1 singles), sophomore Chakor Rajendra (2 singles), sophomore Rishi Verma (3 singles), senior Finn Feldeisen (4 singles) and seniors Joey Formicola and Thomas Zeng at one doubles.

Top incoming players include sophomore Mustafa Zirapury and junior Yaseen Metwally at two doubles.

Greenhills hosts Cranbrook on Tuesday and play at Skyline on Wednesday.
