Cross Country: Pioneer boys and girls team race past Chelsea

The Pioneer boys’ cross country team kicked off its 2020 season with a solid performance against an always strong Chelsea team on Wednesday. The Pioneers took four of the top five spots to score a 21-37 win over the visiting Bulldogs.

Junior Owen Johnson ran first with a time of 16 minutes, 35.3 seconds to help lead the way for Pioneer. Junior Henry MonteSano was third (16:51.5), senior Max Klarman was fourth (17:08.2) and sophomore Roman Cortina was fifth (17:12.4) for the winners.

Junior Fred Wallace was eighth (17:30.0), senior Ben Jakabcsin was ninth (17:30.8) and senior Collin Melnykowycz was 11th (17:44.0). Senior Kevin Dancey was 13th (18:06.5), junior Levi Straszewski was 14th (18:11.4) and senior Garrett Kracht was 15th (18:15.7).

The Pioneers are scheduled to run against Fenton on Wednesday, Sept. 9.

Girls

The Pioneer girls’ team had a dominating performance against Chelsea on Wednesday. Pioneer took the top four spots and five of the top six to score a 16-42 win over the Bulldogs.

Freshman Rachel Forsyth was the first to cross the finish line with a time of 18:59.9. Junior Cookie Baugh was second (19:09.3), senior Anna Dudek third (20:35.3) and sophomore Emily Cooper fourth (20:58.7) for the winners.

Junior Charlotte Batra was sixth (21:18.0), freshman Sylvia Sanok Duffalo was eighth (21:38.1), senior Lauren Jamsen was 12th (22:29.2), sophomore Allison Nutt was 13th (22:39.7) and freshman Mia Berens was 16th (23.44.5).
