Annual Digital Media Arts end-of-year show moves online
ANN ARBOR – The Digital Media Arts [DMA] department at Washtenaw Community College is celebrating the work of its graduating students by publishing a Digital Media Arts Online Gala Gallery.
The page is a collection of online portfolios created by students who will receive degrees or certificates in graphic design and photography, and highlight reels of work produced by digital video and 3D animation students.
“We are very proud of the work these students have put in over the last two or more years and wish them all the best as professionals in their respective fields,” DMA co-chairs Ingrid Ankerson and Don Werthmann wrote in an announcement of the gallery.
The gallery is a replacement for the department’s annual on-campus Digital Media Arts Student Gala, which – like all on-campus events – was cancelled due to Washtenaw Community College suspending operations because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Typically, students display their final works in the college’s Morris Lawrence Building. The annual event serves as a celebration of the students’ work, but also to invite industry professionals to review and critique the portfolios.
The Digital Media Arts Online Gala Gallery is the latest example of WCC faculty and staff coming up with innovative ways to carry on annual on-campus events via virtual delivery. Previously, the college’s Humanities department moved its Student Art Show online; as did the Student Development & Activities department with its WCC Talent Show.
The WCC Digital Media Arts department is recognized for curriculum that prepares students for life-long careers in dynamic visual arts technology industries, with certificate and degree programs in 3D animation, audio technology, digital video, graphic design, photography and web design & development.
