Girls Basketball: Huron wins District opener, face Pioneer on Wednesday; Skyline faces Brighton

The Huron girls’ basketball team apparently isn’t satisfied with just winning the SEC Red Division. The River Rats opened District play with a 57-43 win over Ypsilanti on Monday at Lincoln HS.

Huron will face Pioneer at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in a semifinal game. The River Rats defeated the Pioneers twice during the regular season. But beating a good team three times in one season is never easy – especially a city rival.

On the other side of the bracket, Saline knocked off Belleville 80-59 in the first semifinal game at Lincoln. The Hornets will play the Railsplitters at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the first semifinal game at Lincoln.

The Lincoln finals are at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Dexter opened Districts with a 56-46 victory over Pinckney on Monday night in the first round of the Division 1 District 17 playoffs at Brighton High School. The Dreadnaughts will face South Lyon East (12-7) in a semifinal game at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

On the other side of the Brighton District, host Brighton defeated South Lyon (1-18) 55-8 in the second opening-round game on Monday. The Bulldogs will play Skyline in a semifinal game at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The Eagles won their first game of the season last week on Senior Night.

The finals will be at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 6. All the games are at Brighton High School.

The Dreadnaughts jumped out to a 15-9 lead over the Pirates on Monday night. Each team scored 11 points in the second quarter. Dexter fired up the offense in the third quarter with 18 points to stretch the lead to eight points heading into the final quarter. Dexter outscored Pinckney 12-10 in the fourth quarter.
