Boys Basketball: Pioneers extend winning streak; host Huron on Friday

The Pioneer boys’ basketball team continued its strong February with a 65-44 win Tuesday night at Monroe. Pioneer has gone 4-1 in the month and on Friday face SEC Red Division leading Huron, the last team to beat the Pioneers.

Friday’s city-rivalry matchup is a doubleheader with the girls’ tipping off at 5:30 p.m. followed by the boys game at 7 p.m. The River Rats were the No. 1 ranked team in the state before falling to Skyline on Friday.

After a slow start against the Trojans, the Pioneers cranked things up in the second quarter. The game was tied 12-12 after the first quarter before the Pioneers went on a 16-7 run in the second quarter to take a 28-19 lead into halftime.

Monroe outscored Pioneer 15-14 in the third quarter but the Pioneers put the game away with a 23-10 fourth quarter.

Koebe Moore led the Pioneers with 19 points. The senior guard made 7 of 11 two-point field goal attempts and also had six rebounds and three steals. Mac VanRenterghem also had a big game for the visitors. The senior guard made 3 of 4 three-points shots and 6 of 12 from the floor to finish with 17 points. He also had three rebounds.

Junior guard Aidan Lee had 11 points on 4 of 5 shooting.

Conor Easthope (seven rebounds) and Tapio Heionen-Smith (three rebounds, two steals) each had six points for the Pioneers. Bankaly Camara had five points, six rebounds, three blocks and three steals in the win.
