Swimming: Pioneer sends pool full of swimmers to states after quad-meet sweep

The Pioneer boys’ swimming and diving team hosted a quad-meet on Wednesday night and splashed up three more wins against SEC foes. The Pioneers defeated Tecumseh 150-24, Monroe 148-37 and Lincoln 148-35 as the hosts won all three relays and every individual event.

The big news of the meet was how many events the Pioneers qualified for in not only the MISCA meet but also the Division 1 State Finals.

The team of Jack Wilkening, Vaughn Hajra, Robert Yang and Matthew Segal won the 200 medley relay with a state-qualifying time of 1:37.28. The team of Ryan Hume, Sung-Jae Lee, Koa Williams and Jack Shemke took second in a MISCA-qualifying time of 1:42.45.

The Pioneers swept the 200 free with Teodor Jaworski (state cut time of 1:46.45), Cameron Williston (MISCA time of 1:48.46) and Gabriel Labadie (MISCA time of 1:49.49).

They took the top three spots in the 200 IM with Segal (state cut time of 1:53.62), Hume (state-cut time of 1:59.92) and Lee (MISCA time of 2:08.48) and the 50 free with Hajra (state cut time of 22.67), Yang (state cut time of 22.67) and Shemke (state cut time of 23.27).

Cole Tremewan won diving (288.95 points) with Max Rolla-Mullis second (196.80).

Yang took first in the butterfly (state cut time of 53.05) with Justin Su second (MISCA time of 56.38) and Williams third (MISCA time of 56.39). Segal won the 100 free with a state-cut time of 47.11 and Labadie was third in 49.57.

In the 500 free, Pioneer was as impressive as impressive can get especially so early in the season. Williston took first with a state-cut time of 4:50.92 with Caleb Rice second (state-cut time of 4:53.79) and Jaworski third (state-cut time 4:53.94).

Pioneer’s team of Hajra, Shemke, Labadie and Williston won the 200 free relay in 1:30.80 and beat the state cut time of 1:31.09.  The team of Gabriel Sanchez-Burks, Koa Williams, Jack DeBona and Jaworski took second in a MISCA-qualifying time of 1:34.29.

In the backstroke, Hume took first place with a state-cut time of 54.96 with Wilkening second (state cut time of 55.77) and Rice third (MISCA time of 56.76).

Hajra won the breaststroke with a state-cut time of 59.10 with Samuel Fonte third in a MISCA-qualifying time of 1:03.13.

Pioneer finished the meet by taking the top four spots in the 400 free relay and the first two teams beat the state-qualifying time of 3:20.49. The team of Labadie, Jaworski, Williston and Segal took first in 3:16.51 and the team of  Yang, Alec Lipham, Rice and Hume finished second in 3:19.03.
