Boys Basketball: Skyline tops Wayne in OT in Washtenaw County Showcase

The Skyline boys’ basketball team improved to an impressive 4-1 on the season with an equally impressive 45-44 overtime win over Wayne Memorial on Saturday in the Washtenaw County Showcase at the EMU Convocation Center.

Skyline was led by Chris Cayton with 15 points. Ashay Arora had 11 points, Jack Williams scored eight, Kabir Bergin seven and Jermaine Davis and James Harrison each scored two points.

Covin Riccardo had 10 points and Donte Foreman scored eight for the Zebras.

Cayton hit a big three-pointer and added a free throw in overtime for the Eagles. Bergin made 1 of 2 free throws to give Skyline a one-point lead with 4 seconds left after being fouled on a put-back attempt. Wayne Memorial had one more opportunity as they got the ball up the court quickly but missed a running shot inside the three-point line as time expired.

The game was very close throughout with a 20-20 halftime score and a 40-40 tie at the end of regulation. There were many opportunities for both teams down the stretch of regulation. The Eagles had an open mid-range shot that rimmed out as time expired in regulation.

For most of the game, Wayne Memorial was playing a full-court trapping defense while Skyline played half-court man to man and zone defense. Neither team was able to find much success and momentum on offense in the defensive battle.

Skyline is off until Saturday, Jan 11 when the Eagles face Detroit Pershing at Belleville High School in the Fast Break Invitational.
