Boys Basketball: Team effort helps lead Skyline over University Prep in season opener at EMU

Senior forward Kabir Bergin scored a game-high 17 points and junior guard Chris Cayton scored 16 to lead Skyline to a 57-52 win Tuesday night over University Prep in the Ypsilanti Tip-Off Classic at the EMU Convocation Center.

Bergin also had 3 rebounds, 4 assists and a block and earned MVP honors for the game. Cayton was aggressive all night at the point guard position and along with his 16 points (10 in the second quarter), he also had 6 rebounds and 2 assists.

Jack Williams had a team-high 14 rebounds while adding 7 points for the Eagles.

Denali DeLoach did a solid job in the paint protecting the basket while contributing 5 points, 5 rebounds and 3 blocks. Ashay Arora had great contributions with two big three-pointers and another driving basket for eight points while providing solid defense.

Skyline played 11 players in the game and got positive contributions from each, according to Coach Mike Lovelace.

In the first half, there were multiple lead changes. University prep used some full-court pressure and Skyline was able to take care of the ball well enough with 11 turnovers for the game.

Skyline was down 11-9 after the first quarter but led 31-27 at the half.

The Eagles had a 40-39 lead after the third quarter.

“DeLoach and Bergin made big free throws and the team defense came together to get important stops in the final couple minutes to earn a solid victory,” said Lovelace.

Skyline will travel to Belleville on Friday.
