AAPS: Safety Town is back for 43rd year of helping children learn a variety of ways to keep safe
Community High School junior Parker Haymart recalls with fondness his week at Safety Town a decade ago.
Now he’s back to volunteer at the popular annual event.
“I wanted to do some volunteer work,” said Parker, who enjoys working with kids. “So I decided Safety Town would be a fun camp to do, and I’m liking it so far.”
Parker is one of about 160 volunteers who joined a small staff from Rec & Ed to host four one-week sessions of Safety Town this summer at Dicken Elementary.
The annual program is aimed at increasing the safety-focused knowledge of children entering Young 5, kindergarten, or first grade.
About 660 students have signed up this year for the ever-popular program. Students learn important information regarding buses, bike riding, electricity, water play, guns, stranger danger, fire, and more.
The fourth and final week concludes on Friday. Enrollment for the 2023 sessions will begin next March. Parents and guardians are encouraged to sign up then as spaces fill fast.
