Swimming: Pioneer holds off (friends) and rival Skyline in dual-meet

Pioneer hosted friends and rival Skyline in an SEC boys’ swimming and diving dual-meet on Tuesday night and both teams swam away with impressive times, plenty of confidence and a pool full of good times. And that’s the way it should be.

Pioneer, the defending state champions, held off talented Skyline for a 102-81 win to remain undefeated on the young season. It was Skyline’s first dual-meet loss of the season.

Pioneer opened the meet with a win in the medley relay. The team of Jack Wilkening, Alex Farmer, Robert Yang and Caleb Rice went 1 minute, 37.32 seconds to touch first. The Skyline team of Owen Schadler, Daniel Osterholzer, Lucas Caswell and Jack Staunton took second in 1:40.82.

Pioneer went one-two in the 200 free with Teodor Jaworski first (1:45.92) and Harrison Sanders second (1:47.61). Skyline’s Evan McKelvey was third in 1:47.91.

Skyline’s Ben Kurniawan won the IM in 1:57.58. Pioneer’s Rice was second (2:00.38) and Skyline’s Caswell was third (2:02.00).

Skyline’s Matthew Lee won the 50 free in 21.42 seconds. Wilkening took second for Pioneer in 21.58 and Skyline’s Staunton touched third in 22.21.

In a very close diving matchup, Skyline’s Stuart Knight took first with 198.35 points. Pioneer’s Gabriel Mercier was second (198.05) and Skyline’s Soren Nielsen was third (147.20).

Ben Kurniawan won his second race of the meet for Skyline with a win in the butterfly in 51.19. Yang was second for the Pioneers in 52.49 and Caswell was third in 53.66 for Skyline.

In one of the closest swims of the meet, Wilkening won the 100 free in 47.32 and Ryan Hume touched second in 47.41 for the Pioneers. Lee took third for Skyline in 47.74.

The Pioneers took the top three spots in the 500 free. Jaworski was first (4:54.97) followed by Jensen Wood (4:59.92) and Alec Lipham (5:06.08). Skyline’s Andy Xi was fourth (5:15.58).

The Eagles won the 200 free relay as the team of Staunton, Evan McKelvey, Ben Kurniawan and Lee touched first in 1:27.91. The Pioneer team of Wilkening, Farmer, Hume and Yang was a very, very (very) close second in 1:27.97.

Rice won the backstroke for Pioneer in 54.85. Schadler was second (56.88) for Skyline and Isaac Almeida was third (57.39) for Pioneer.

In the breaststroke, Farmer took first in 59.34 for Pioneer. Osterholzer was second (1:01.48) and Staunton third (1:02.94) for Skyline.

The Skyline foursome of Caswell, Lee, Evan McKelvey and Ben Kurniawan won the 400 free relay in 3:15.71. Pioneer’s team of Jaworski, Lipham, Rice and Hume was second in 3:18.59.
