Boys Basketball: Skyline turns over Monroe for conference win; Huron next
The Skyline boys’ basketball team wrapped up its second consecutive win on Monday night with a 59-52 victory at Monroe in an SEC Red Division matchup. The Eagles need all the confidence they can get as they head to Huron tonight (Tuesday) to face the undefeated and state-ranked River Rats.
They have now won two straight following losses to Saline and Dearborn Divine Child.
While Huron was holding off Pioneer across town on Monday night, the Eagles headed south and had their hands full with a solid Monroe club. They probably won’t win a state title, but the Trojans have game.
Jack Williams scored 16 points and Chris Cayton had 12 points to lead the Eagles into the win column. Ashay Aroroa had eight points, Dinalli DeLoach scored six and Cole Streeter finished with five points. James Harrison, Jermaine Davis and Will Gardner scored four points apiece in the win.
Xander Middleton led Monroe with 16 points.

The first quarter started out with an offensive explosion for both sides as each team was hitting shots inside and outside. Both teams connected on four three-point shots while also scoring in the paint. Skyline led 24-20 after the first quarter. Jack Williams hit three triples for Skyline and Middleton hit two for the home team.
The second quarter settled in a little more defensively and each team played with confidence. Monroe was able to take advantage by getting to the free-throw line making all six attempts to keep the game close.
Skyline led 34-33 at the break.
In third quarter, Monroe continued to work their zone defense and Skyline started to increase full-court pressure and create some turnovers.
Both teams scored 11 points in the third quarter and the Eagles led 45-44 after three.
In the fourth quarter, Skyline turned up the defensive pressure in the full court forcing more turnovers and converting several into transition baskets. The Eagles built an eight-point lead with about 2 minutes left.
Skyline was able to take care of the ball and make enough free throws to secure the victory.
