Hockey: Skyline’s big first period helps Eagles skate past River Rats

The Skyline hockey team netted seven goals in the first period and skated to a 9-1 win over Huron on Monday at the Ice Cube. Six different Eagles scored goals in that opening period.

“We played a great first period but lacked purpose and drive in the second period,” said Skyline Coach Jake Stripp. “But I’m happy we had 13 of 16 skaters get a point.”

Skyline’s Dalan Patterson had his first career win in net stopping six of seven shots.

The goals came quick and often for the Eagles.

At 3:48, Peter Shellhaas scored with an assist from Adam Kulick. Less than a minute later, Sei Nakamura scored with assists from Ryan Garrett and Jack Brady.

Less than 2 minutes later, AJ Schmunk scored with assists from Brady and Jamie Newton. Schmunk scored again less than 2 minutes later with assists from Lance Maugh and Sam Begosso to make it 4-0.

Yann Reichbart scored with assists from Garrett and Kulick and then Newton scored from Nakamura to push the lead to 6-0. Skyline finished the first-period scoring when Jack Bazzani scored from Newton and Schmunk at 16:26 to make it 7-0.

Begosso scored at 1:47 of the second period with assists from Max Stevens and Schmunk to make it 8-0.

Huron’s Duane Michaels scored with assists from David Patterson and Jensen Bruch to get the River Rats on the board.

Nakamura scored at 13:30 of the second period to make it 9-1 to finish the game.
