Girls Basketball: Pioneer bounces back with two wins (see WLAA photo gallery)

The Pioneer girls’ basketball team showed how you bounce back from a loss – a couple of victories is a good start. Following a 58-34 loss to SEC rival Saline, the Pioneers responded with a pair of SEC victories.

On Thursday, Pioneer bounced Lincoln 60-16 in a game the home dominated from the opening jump ball (well, they don’t have jump balls this year but you get the idea). Pioneer outscored the Railsplitters 16-6 in the first quarter, 15-3 in the second quarter and 18-0 in the third quarter.

Junior Lauren DeWolf scored seven of her 16 points in the third quarter and sophomore Kayla Covington finished with 12 points to lead the Pioneers.

Alexis Clark had eight points and Jackie Brines had seven points. Mya Hicks had five points and Felicia Stewart and Brein Bogan each scored four points.

On Friday, Pioneer knocked off visiting Bedford in a closer game 40-37. The Pioneers led 12-11 after the first quarter but trailed at halftime 20-18.

Pioneer had a strong third quarter, outscoring the Kicking Mules 14-8 to take a 32-28 lead into the fourth quarter. Bedford outscored Pioneer 9-8 in the final period but it wasn’t enough.

Hicks had a huge game for the winners. The junior guard scored eight of her game-high 17 points in the first quarter and knocked down three triples for the Pioneers.

DeWolf had another solid performance with 12 points. Clark scored seven points in the win.

Pioneer hosts city rival Huron at 7 p.m. on Monday.
