Swimming: Skyline comes up short at Saline in matchup of SEC heavyweights
The Skyline boys’ swimming and diving team flew into a Hornet’s nest on Thursday and were stung for the first time this season. Saline won two relays and took first in six individual events to score a 108-78 win over the Eagles on Thursday night in a battle of SEC Red Division heavyweights.
“I think our solid week of training caught up with us,” said Skyline Coach Maureen Murrett. “We did have some breakthrough swims from our younger guys.”
The Eagles fall to 1-1 on the young season after opening last Thursday with a win over Bedford.
The Skyline foursome of Ben Deininger, Daniel Osterholzer, Lucas Caswell and Daniel Koselka were a close second in the medley relay in 1:41.96. Saline took first in 1:39.10.
Evan McKelvey was third in the 200 free in 1:52.22.
Skyline sophomore Ben Kurniawan took first in the 200 IM with a time of 1:59.85. Caswell touched third in 2:05.75.
In the 50 free, Jack Staunton was third (23.58), Osterholzer was fourth (24.50) and John Evangelista was fifth (24.63) for the Eagles.
Skyline sophomores Charlie Andrew-Vaughn (third, 154.05 points) and Soren Nielsen (fourth, 140.15) brought home points for the Eagles in diving.
Ben Kurniawan won his second race of the meet when he touched first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 52.57. Chris Kurniawan was third in 56.68.
McKelvey touched second in the 100 free (49.89) followed by Koselka (52.15).
Caswell was third (5:11.74) and Andrew Xi fourth (5:11.91) in the 500 free.
The Eagles landed one-two in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of McKelvey, Deininger, Staunton and Ben Kurniawan took first in 1:34.57. The team of Osterholzer, Conor Pyle, John Evangelista and Xi placed second in 1:38.97.
Chris Kurniawan, only a freshman, won the backstroke in 58.29. Deininger was third in 1:01.58.
In the breaststroke, Osterholzer was third (1:02.63), Staunton was fourth (1:06.65) and Pyle was fifth (1:07.79) for Skyline.
The team of McKelvey, Caswell, Koselka and Ben Kurniawan were second in 3:26.26.
