Swimming: River Rats lock down first places and state-cut times at Dexter

The Huron girls’ swimming and diving team traveled to Dexter on Saturday for their first regular season dual meet against the Dreadnaughts. Despite losing 106-80 to a very talented Dexter team, the River Rats showed some strong performances, starting with their 200 Medley Relay squad of junior Annaliese Streeter, sophomore Ayaka Sakamoto, junior Emily Tran and freshman Zannah Baker, who easily took 1st (1:53:72).
Tran, Z. Baker, sophomore Kathryn Hammila and Streeter also touched first in the 200 Free relay (1:43:46).
Streeter won the 50 free (24.28), pocketing her state cut, and the 500 (5:25:73), while Tran took the 100 Back (1:02:14) and the 100 Fly (59.97), for which she took home the D1 cut as well.
Senior/captain Anna Leone placed first in the 100 Breast (1:12.76).
Junior diver Annie Costello (283.65) came in first in a tight field, just ahead of Dexter freshman Lily Witte (281.90) and junior Emma Sortor (1:04:88). Huron junior Julie Park (182.10) took 5th place points,while sophomore Sitara Baxendale (106.70) also represented the Rats on the board.
Other points-scoring Huron swimmers included Hemmila (2:07.54) and sophomore Ezgi Poyraz (2:10.75), 3rd and 5th, respectively in the 200 Free; senior captain Anna Leone (2:23.62) and junior Clara Bowman (2:31.45), 2nd and 5th in the 200 IM; Z. Baker (26.17) 2nd in the 50 free and the 100 free (57.62), and sophomore Cali Streeter (1:13.21), 5th in the 100 Fly. Bowman was 3rd in the 100 Back (1:05:50), with Sakamoto, 3rd in the 100 Breast (1:15.40). Bringing home 5th place points for Huron were Hemmila in the 100 Free (59.75), and Poyraz, in the 500 Free (5:50:70).
Appearing in their first ever dual meet were freshmen Catherine Li and Hannah Burmann.
Huron plays host next Saturday, Sept. 14 to a Quad meet, welcoming Bedford, Pinckney, and Chelsea.
