Golf: Local players honored with All-State awards
The 2020 Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association recently announced the postseason awards and honors for this past girls’ golf season. And Ann Arbor teed up some impressive results.
Both Skyline junior Adie Maki and Pioneer senior Amaya Melendez (top photo) were named to the All-State Division 1 First Team.
Only a junior, Maki fired a 73 at the Division 1 State Finals on the tough MSU Forest Akers East course last month to finish tied for second in the individual standings. She also was an All-SEC First Team selection.
Melendez fired a four-over-par 76 to lead the Pioneers and placed ninth overall at the Division 1 State Finals. She also was an All-SEC First Team selection.
Pioneer, the only local team to make the trip to East Lansing, fired a team score of 360 to place 10th overall. The Pioneers went undefeated in the SEC Red Division to win the league title.
The Skyline varsity team was named Academic All-State Team (team GPA above 3.50) for the 10th year in a row. The Eagles varsity regional team had GPA of 3.92.
Pioneer also was named Academic All-State as a team.
Skyline’s Alison Marshall, Grace Hescheles and Katie Maugh along with Pioneer’s Jillian Giordano were named Academic All-State, a senior varsity award based on both academics (3.75 or above GPA) and golf excellence.
