Season Preview: Skyline football looks to make the next step – playoffs?

Since going winless in 2014, the Skyline football team has been close to getting back on track and back to the playoffs. But you know what they say about being close.

The Eagles won four games in 2015 and again in 2016. They won three in 2017 and won four again last season. Four wins are nice, but two more are needed to quality for the state playoffs and that’s where the Eagles want to land eventually.

Eventually could be in 2019.

“Our main goal is to improve each and every day,” said Skyline Coach Andrew Sorgatz, now in his fourth year as coach at Skyline. “If we do that, what we want will be attainable.

“The key is to continue to come together as a team, continue to lift each other up, and improve each week. We want to start every game fast and finish every game strong. We need to control what we can control and focus on what we have to do to get better.”

The two wins last year included victories over Huron and Pioneer to claim the city championship.

The Eagles have plenty of positives to build on this season. They are strong at the skill positions.

“We have a lot of speed and physicality at those spots,” says Sorgatz. “We have good experience and leadership from the secondary. Our offensive line has good camaraderie and is getting better every practice.

“The team has a great attitude and is always striving to learn and improve every single day. We will be fast and physical.”

The Eagles continue to build the offensive line which will feature some new pieces this season.

“We are young at a few spots, but we will get better with experience,” Sorgatz says. “We need to continue to improve our depth.”
