Soccer Preview: Huron kicks up mix of talented veterans with strong newcomers
After a great season by the Huron girls’ soccer team in the spring, the boys are on notice and the River Rats seemed ready for the challenge.
“Our goal is to be competitive during our eight home games at Riverbank Stadium and prepare for a run in the postseason,” says Huron Coach Luis Gomez. “We have depth at every position as well as strong leadership for the 2020 senior class.”
But there is work to be done, especially along a young and inexperienced backline.
“We will be looking to replace a backline that included four senior defenders and a senior goalkeeper,” says Gomez, in his first season as head coach and third with the program.
Huron went 10-8-2 last season and has some key players returning to the pitch. Dante Bailey was All-State Honorable Mention last season and will play both on defense and in the midfield during his senior year. Also returning are senior forward Amari Bowman, junior keeper Elliot Goebel, senior forward ZolanBaptista and senior defender Jake Bernstein.
Top newcomers include junior midfielder Neeko Cho and sophomore defender/midfielder Mundar Chen. “Both were varsity members last season and we are looking forward to seeing them step up and have bigger roles this upcoming season,” says Gomez.
The River Rats open the season at Tecumseh High School.
