Matt Paterini wins his sixth City of Ann Arbor Men’s Golf Championship in playoff

It took a playoff to decide the 2019 City of Ann Arbor Men’s Golf Championship.

The event, featuring Ann Arbor’s best golfers, consists of three rounds played over three days (Friday through Sunday) at Leslie Park Golf Course.

This year’s event had plenty of excitement and came down to the 54th … and 55th holes.

Matt Paterini, a five-time champion of this event, and Brendan Petzak, the 2016 Herb Fowler Champion and current sophomore golfer at Madonna University, exchanged leads numerous times down the back 9 stretch on Sunday. The pair, who started the day with a 5-stroke lead over eventual 3rd place finisher Jon Keller, wound up deadlocked after 54 holes. Keller, who ignited the sizable gallery with a 140 yard hole out on the final hole of the day was thrilled to make the podium.

“Honestly, I got caught watching the match between those two (Paterini and Petzak) and lost track of my own game. I looked up after the hole out and surprised myself with a 1 under back nine,” said Keller.

The playoff went back to the first hole where Paterini made a pressure packed birdie in front of the crowd and finished off what was very nearly a blown lead on Sunday afternoon to secure his sixth Championship.

The event is an annual favorite among Ann Arbor area golfers.
